REMADE Announces $4.86M in New Technology Research to Increase Materials Recoveryin U.S. Manufacturing

The REMADE Institute, a 150-member public-private partnership established in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with an initial investment of $140 million, announced $4.86 million in new technology research, selecting 10 new research demonstration, verification and validation (DV&V) projects as part of the Institute’s latest round of funding.

REMADE’s new DV&V projects will demonstrate tools and technologies that are at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 and will reach TRL 7 by the end of their project. Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) describe the various phases of technology development, with TRLs 4-7 typically referred to as the “Valley of Death” — the critical gap between early-stage research and commercial viability where promising innovations often fail to transition from the laboratory to the marketplace.

REMADE Institute logo

These new DV&V projects will not only address the Valley of Death for these technologies but will also increase U.S. manufacturing competitiveness; strengthen the resilience of the domestic supply chain; decrease manufacturing energy consumption; and advance the Circular Economy by increasing the reuse, remanufacturing, recovery, and recycling of critical minerals and rare earth elements, aluminum, textiles, electronics scrap, diesel engine blocks, steel, and paper.

This latest round of investment, the Institute’s seventh, is cost-shared between REMADE and the funding recipients. Of the 10 new projects, some involve new partners for REMADE. They will join the Institute’s existing partners, including industry innovators and academic researchers with Caterpillar, John Deere, Michelin, Nike, Adidas, MIT, RIT, Honda, Volvo, Yale University and many more.

REMADE Chief Technology Officer Magdi Azer said it’s important for research institutes like REMADE to provide ongoing investment in technologies to ensure they advance through the Valley of Death, noting that REMADE had previously funded six prior Requests for Proposals (RFPs).

“This is exactly why the Manufacturing USA institutes were established in the first place more than a decade ago,” Azer said. “These new DV&V projects will, for example, explore better ways to recover total rare earth oxides from electronic scrap; utilize computer vision and AI to reduce the cost of electronics recycling; recover and recycle aerospace and automotive aluminum; repair diesel engine blocks; use secondary steel to produce new tires; improve paper recycling; expand textile recycling; and increase the circularity of new product designs.”

Since the Institute’s founding in 2017, REMADE has launched or selected 103 technology R&D and workforce development projects, representing a total combined value of $104 million.

Nonwovenn Continues Sustainability Initiatives

One of the world’s leading nonwoven fabric-tech companies, UK based Nonwovenn, has continued its mission to set a new industry benchmark for sustainability by placing a key focus on the continued implementation of eco-friendly policies and initiatives.

Nonwovenn sustainability initiatives

The first quarter of 2026 saw Nonwovenn attain the highest CDP climate change score an SME can achieve. Alongside this, while the business was already reported on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Scope 1 and 2 emissions, it has recently also started to report on GHG Scope 3 for several emissions categories. The implementation of Scope 3 reporting again places the business ahead of the curve in the nonwovens industry, as many are not yet undertaking calculations.

For a third year running Nonwovenn reported that it has sent zero waste to landfill, continuing to convert it into ‘Refuse Derived Fuel’ through a service partner. By recycling waste in this way, the business is able to avoid 350 tonnes of CO2 emissions that would otherwise have been emitted from landfill.

The business was previously awarded the coveted EcoVadis Gold Medal for its outstanding sustainability performance. The accolade places Nonwovenn in the top five per cent of all global companies and is assessed by incredibly vigorous metrics.

Building on the achievements to date, Nonwovenn has also confirmed it now uses 100% green electricity, and 50% green gas, with an aim to increase this further in the coming years to 100% on both elements.

RE&UP Establishes Fiber Club Consortium to Scale Next-Gen Material Sourcing

The RE&UP Fiber Club: a collaborative path to scale.
The RE&UP Fiber Club: a collaborative path to scale.

Shifting the paradigm of fashion sustainability from isolated capsule collections to structural, industrial-scale reality, RE&UP announced the official launch of RE&UP and its Fiber Club. This landmark initiative introduces a collaborative consortium framework, originally developed as an umbrella framework by innovation platform Fashion for Good, designed to dismantle traditional supply chain barriers and accelerate the global adoption of premium recycled materials.

For years, the integration of high-quality, next-generation recycled textiles has been hindered by fragmented supply chains, restrictive minimum order quantities (MOQs), and prohibitive upfront costs, frequently trapping sustainability initiatives in a perpetual “pilot phase”. RE&UP is changing the rules.

The journey within RE&UP and its Fiber Club is engineered to be straightforward and structurally de-risked, guiding brand partners through four clear operational phases:

  1. Consortium structure & alignment: Establishing the framework and aligning key supply chain stakeholders.
  2. Initial material sampling: Reviewing standardized material specifications and aligning on specific supply terms.
  3. Pilot collection development: Designing and launching an initial commercial collection at the individual brand level.
  4. Long-Term partnership: Securing long-term fiber purchase commitments at predictable, discounted rates, successfully transitioning brands to a permanent circular supply chain.

“The technology to recycle textiles is only half the battle; the real hurdle is commercial alignment. With RE&UP and its Fiber Club, the baseline for high-volume, compliant circularity is active and operationally ready today. We are giving forward-thinking brands the plug-and-play infrastructure required to stop experimenting with sustainability and start scaling it,” said Andreas Dorner, General Manager of RE&UP.
